Duck, Duck, Goose!

Okay, not really ducks or geese but it is about chickens!

As I stated in the first post, we bought a house on 2 acres. We have LOTS just a few plans for it and it's kind of hard to know what to start with. I was browsing Craigslist the other day and saw some uber cute baby goats for sale! I showed PJ and he actually told me we could get them! As much as I wanted to I decided we needed to start with something we actually planned on doing first, like chickens.  And so the chicken search began.
I found a lady selling fertile eggs and set up a time to pick them up. Jr is riding in a horse show Saturday in Cocoa and the lady selling the eggs is just south of there so we will be picking them up afterwards. We are planning on getting 2 dozen since we plan on having less and I have read that you will lose a few eggs and possibly chicks and some will be roosters so its best to get more than you actually want.  She has 4-5 breeds available, I think I decided on Easter Eggers and Delawares. Easter Eggers lay blue, pink and green eggs and Delawares lay different shades of brown.
We purchased our incubator from Tractor supply today. As we pulled up Junior says, " Ooh yay, I love this place!" Can you tell we are no longer city folk?! Junior got to skip nap time today to help me set up the incubator. I'm glad we started today because I am still fine tuning the temperature on it, it's a little tricky to keep at 99.5 degree.
He's just a little bit excited =)
We are all pretty excited about raising chickens. Junior is my big animal lover just like his mommy, he would take home every animal he saw if I let him.  If you see a squirrel you better plan on stopping and watching for 5 minutes and it's best to have some raw peanuts on hand for him to feed to them.  Lillian isn't too into animals but when I showed her the incubator I told her we are going to put eggs in it and they will hatch into baby chicks like we saw at the store (Tractor Supply was selling chicks today) and she said "awww".
I have been staring at my phone and laptop screen every spare second the last few days absorbing in every little detail I can about chickens and chicken coops. We are going to build it all ourselves so I am trying to figure out everything we need to successfully raise the chickens.  We want a coop large enough so if we wanted to add more chickens we can and we also want it to be able to move since our yard is nowhere near finished on how we want it all to look.
So begins our chicken journey. Stay tuned for updates!
